R. Murdoch |
The British Government is being ROCKED by the Murdoch News Corp. scandal of inside information published in the "World News", which was forced to close this past week. Not being an insider, one could only surmise that the published information that the reporters were gathering is accurate and damaging. Private information about the habits of many, more than 3000 people were written about, exposed and even outed by this world famous tabloid. The Murdoch empire is far from crumbling, but certainly the scandal has had an impact on his media empire.
The American press is having a field day with this story. It's been broadcast on every news network, cable and network television, across the radio airwaves, in all the written media. Over the weekend the Commissioner of Scotland Yard, the UK National Police and his Assistant Director resigned. Prime Minister Cameron is under inquiry since he hired Murdoch's Editor as his Media Representative for Downing Street. Fleet Street is also reeling. (The Press of U.K.)

HACKER |
While the World media is talking about this being a "HACKING" scandal, it is a combination of corruption at the government level, corporate level, alleged illegal payments to law enforcement authorities, and even possible murder. The initial whistle-blower from within the World News has been found dead after public disclosure of such questionable activity. "HACKING" implies that the information from e-mail addresses were gathered via computer intrusion.
However, throughout the world such information is bought and sold daily. On the world net, one can find many sellers of software which will intrude upon any telephone number, e-mail address and even every one's privacy. In the United States, the U.S. Constitution DOES NOT refer to "PRIVACY". However, intrusion into ones personal and business telephone calls, Internet access, e-mail piggy-backing or even credit reports is defined as a VIOLATION of LAW, ranging from a Misdemeanor to Felony. It is all dependent on which State the intrusion occurred, the method used and the overt criminal act to be proven in a court of law.
Freedom of the PRESS in America is protected in the Constitution by the First Amendment, section;l Freedom of Speech. However, rogue reporters have often been charged with Trespassing, Harassment and Electronic Intrusion. In the past, before the Internet, e-mails or social networking, police investigators, investigative reporters and attorney's would hire Private Investigators to collect information. Some would do what were described at the time as "BLACK-BAG JOBS" (Break-Ins) of targets; homes, autos and business, as well as close associates. They would often use "DROP" listening devices, transmitter on the telephone line, or put a "RABBIT" (tracker) under the frame of an auto to aid in following the subject's vehicle. "GARBAGE RAIDS" is always a good way to collect information. That's why SHREDDERS were developed to destroy the important documents, like; credit card bills, electric bills, medical reports and prescriptions, health insurance documents, bank records, checking account information.
