COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY DRUG BUST

WOW!!! The Ivy League woke-up today to the fact that some of their brothers, fraternity brothers were now in the custody of the New York City Police Department. Information from NYPD suggests that 5 students were in the business of keeping Columbia University students "high" on everything from cocaine, Ecstasy, marijuana and other drugs.

NYPD reports that they had received numerous complaints to the NYPD hot line. Undercover narcotics detectives managed to penetrate the group and began purchases over a period of time. It is reported that more than 30 purchases were made by police detectives from the 5 students. They spent a approximately $11,000 to purchase from the students at their respective fraternity houses.

Some Columbia students were not surprised. While others were shocked that these frat brothers were involved in drug sales. It was suggested that the student drug dealers were in need of cash to pay for school. Three non-student drug suppliers were also arrested.

A University spokesman described this as how it effects the entire college community. The students were arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and all pled "NOT GUILTY". A common practice.

Who else was involved? Where did they purchase the drugs and from whom?  Were others at the University involved. What about the fraternities? Who was watching the house? Where is the University on this? They have not said.

One University official reports that he is not too surprised in that most colleges have similar drug problems. Does that mean that it's okay! Others do, so whats the problem. No excuses, blame society! Don't blame the students, the enablers, the frat houses, blame all the university communities across America. Columbia University is just like any other college campus.  I don't think so!!!

One has to remember that Columbia University was the 1968 Anti-War Riots and the creation of the Weathermen Domestic Terror group. The students led by Mark Rudd, Weatherman leader captured the administration buildings for several day's. The University tried to negotiate, but the students wouldn't give-up and walk free from the University Administrative offices. Finally, NYPD was brought in to clear the campus. It was not just students, it was communist agitators and rebellious anti-American groups. NYPD cleared the campus and the buildings, some students were injured, others arrested, several police officers were injured and one died from his injuries a week later. No one was held accountable for his death.

The University declared a truce with the students, whose protest was also involving anti-Dow Chemical activities of research on campus. Dow Chemical was a primary supplier of chemicals used in the Vietnam War.The University cancelled its agreement with Dow Chemical. Most students returned to classes, some leaders were suspended from the University, others moved on to further Anti-War activities.  The Weathermen joined forces with the Black Liberation Army and members committed armed robberies and even some killings of police officers around the United States.

No surprises here, that drugs and drug sales are on the Columbia University campus, faced with this latest problem. One can agree that drugs and drug sales are not new to college campuses. However, as some stududents expressed surprise that some students were accused in the Drug Sales. These are Honor /Students, bright and with great futures ahead. Now who knows what their future will bring. For some one can guess it will be reflection time, and time in jail. Others will see rehab as an avenue out from the Criminal Justice System. However, it will always be a negative on their futures.
